Day 2 Prelimes

This morning began day 2 of the 4 day NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships.  The meet began with the 200 yard freestyle relay.  The team of Melissa Gates, Rachel Kurta, Caitlyn Sirkoch, and Ester Bosch touched the wall with a time of 1:35.60 putting them in 9th place going into finals this evening.  Next was Georgia Emert in the 400 yard individual medley.  Emert finished in 24th place overall with a time of 4:36.03.  Ester Bosch also swam the 100  yard butterfly this morning.  Bosch finished in 32nd place overall with a time of 58.56.  The last event of the morning was the 400 yard medley relay.  The relay team of Georgia Emert, Melissa Gates, Ester Bosch, and Rachel Kurta swam a time of 3:59.48 finishing in 27th place overall.

The Vulcans head into finals tonight swimming the 200 yard freestlye relay in the consolation heat.  The goal for the relay is to dominate their heat and improve their best time.

Day 1 Finals

Last night Sophomore Melissa Gates swam the 50 yard freestyle and came out in 4th place overall with a time of 23.32. She was the only swimmer of the night for the Vulcans

Day 1 - Prelims

The NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships began early this morning in Canton, Ohio.  The Vulcans began the meet with Georgia Emert in the 200 individual medley.  Emert finished in 27th place impriving her time and school record time by a half a second with a time of 2:09.48.  Following Emert was Melissa Gates in the 50 yard freestyle.  Gates was seated second going into the event and is now seated 5th going in to finals tonight.  She swam a time of 23.50 this morning and is ready to swim faster this evening.  As Gates says “I’m going to Run This Town Tonight!”  The last event was the 200 medley relay.  Swimming was Georgia Emert, Cailtyn Sirkoch, Ester Bosch, and Melissa Gates in a time of 1:48.01 and finishing in 23rd place.

Melissa Gates is the only swimmer who will be swimming this evening in the 50 yard freestyle.  Competition begins at 6:00pm. 

NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

The NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS will begin tomorrow morning at 10:30am!  The Vulcans have six swimmers who are competing in the meet.  Canton, Ohio welcomed the team late in the afternoon on Monday.  The team arrives early to get settled, practice in the pool, and participate in NCAA events.

Cal Finishes 5th Overall

Tonight was the final night of competition of the PSAC Championship.  Going in to tonight the Vulcans were in 6th place.  The Vulcans finished the meet in 5th place overall.  West Chester took home the win for both men and women.

The night began with Geeorgia Emert in the 200 yard backstroke.  Emert came in 6th place with a time of 2;07.73.

Following the backstroke was the 100 yard freestyle which featured Rachel Kurta in the consolation heat and Melissa Gates & Ester Bosch in the final heat. Kurta swam a time of 54.40 finishing 15th. Bosch swam a time of 52.21 in 4th place and Gates swam a time of 51.13 finishing in 3rd place.

The last two individuals of the night featured Caitlyn Sirkoch and Bruna Carvalho.  Sirkoch swam the 200 yard breaststroke in a time of 2:29.46 finishing in 11th place. Carvalho swam the 200 yard butterfly in a time of 2:11.76 finishing in 8th place.

The Vulcans topped the night off with the 400 yard freestyle relay. The relay team of Melissa Gates, Rachel Kurta, Kelly Geras, and Ester Bosch finished in 3rd place with a time of 3:31.25. 

The Vulcans qualified six swimmers for the NCAA Championship meet that will be held in Canton, Ohio.  The National team of Melissa Gates, Georgia Emert, Ester Bosch, Rachel Kurta, Kelly Geras, and Caitlyn Sirkoch will continue to train for the next two weeks. The meet will be held on March 10-13.

The Final Day

It’s the final day of the four day PSAC Championship Meet. This morning the Vulcans had all personal best times in every race. The meet began when Kasey Travitz dominated her heat in the 200 yard backstroke with a time of 2:12.52. Following her was Meghan Schuh in the next heat who swam a time of 2:13.19. Next was Georgia Emert who made the NCAA “B” qualifying time with a 2:07.41 and will also be swimming again tonight in the final heat.

It then was time for some sprinting with the 100 yard freestlye next. Kelly Geras swam a time of 54.98, Rachel Kurta 54.19, Ester Bosch 52.14, and Melissa Gates 51.31. Bosch’s time met the NCAA “B” qualifying standard and Gates who has already qualified for the event with an NCAA “A” qualifying time. Gates and Bosch will be swimming the final heat and Kurta in the consolation heat tonight.

Following that event came the 200 yard breaststroke. The Vulcans only had one swimmer featured in this event. Freshman Caitlyn Sirkoch swam the event in a time of 2:29.61. She will be swimming again tonight in the consolation heat.

Concluding the morning was the 200 yard butterfly. Sophomore Ellie Imhof has a breath taking race with a time of 2:14.67 dropping nearly 15 seconds off her seed time. Althought she just missed coming back again tonight she had the swim of her life. Last up was Bruna Carvalho who made the NCAA “B” qualifying time of 2:10.56. She will be swimming tonight in the final heat as she finished in 8th place this morning. Tonight the Vulcans look to gain points to move up in the overall team scores. The 400 yard freestyle relay will be swum tonight. The relay qualified for NCAA’s Thursday night and look to impove on their time tonight. Seniors will also be recognized prior to the start of the final session to honor those individuals for their remarkable college careers. Ester Bosch and Rachel Kurta are the only seniors for the Vulcans.

A Record Breaking Saturday Night

Tonight the Vulcans came out strong!  The night began when the 200 yard medly relay of Kasey Travitz, Caitlyn Sirkoch, Bruna Carvalho, and Rachel Kurta finished in 9th place with a time of 1:49.50.  Following the relay, Freshman Georgia Emert swam the 400 yard individual medley.  She swam the event in a 4:32.94 which was an NCAA “A” qualifying time and finished in second place overall.  She re-set the school record again this evening as well.  Emert is now the 6th team member of the 2010 NCAA Team.  Next up was the 100 yard butterfly.  Bruna Carvalho was the first to swim and swam a time of 59.88.  Senior Ester Bosch was to follow with a time of 58.27 which was good enough for 7th place overall.  Following the butterfly was the 200 yard freestyle which featured two of the Vulcans in the consolation heat.  Rachel Kurta and Kelly Geras dominated the heat and took home 9th and 10th place.  Kurta swam a time of 1:55.98, an NCAA “B” qualifying time, and Geras swam a 1:57.39.  Sophomore Melissa Gates was next up to swim tonight.  She swam the 100 yard breaststroke in a time of 1:06.74 and finished in 6th place.  The last individual event for the evening was the 100 yard backstroke.  Freshman Kasey Travitz, who had a spectacular prelim swim, finished in 8th place with a time of 1:00.17.  The final event of the record breaking night was the 800 yard freestyle relay.  The relay of Melissa Gates, Georgia Emert, Kelly Geras, and Ester Bosch swam a spectacular race and won third place with a time of 7:46.34.  The relay team set a new school record too. 

The Vulcans remain in 6th place in the overall women’s team scores.  With the final day of competition tomorrow the Vulcans look to advance up in team scores.  Tomorrow will be a tough day for the Vulcans as it is the final day of a four day meet.  It is going to take determination, focus, and strength for the women to continue to dominate.

Day 3 and still STRONG

This morning the Vulcans continued to set record breaking swims. The meet began when Freshman Georgia Emert swam the 400 yard individual medley in a time of 4:35.75, which has her seated second place going in to tonight. Her time was also an NCAA B qualifying time and a school record. The 100 yard butterfly was next. Ellie Imhof swam a personal best of 1:01.12 and finished in 20th. Bruna Carvalho swam a 59.36 and will be swimming tonight in the consolation heat. Senior Ester Bosch touched in wall with an NCAA B qualifying time of 58.57 and will be swimming tonight in the final heat. The 200 yard freestlye starred Kelly Geras and Rachel Kurta. Both swimmers will be swimming tonight in the consolation heat. Geras finished in a time of 1:58.70 and Kurta touched in at 1:57.84. The 100 yard breaststroke was next with Melissa Gates and Caitlyn Sirkoch swimming for the Vulcans. Sirkoch swam a time of 1:08.62 and finished in 17th place, just missing the consolation heat. Gates swam a time of 1:06.41 and will be swimming in the final heat tonight in 6th place. The final event of the morning was thrilling! Freshman Kasey Travitz swam the 100 yard backstroke and touched the wall with a time of 59.45. She will be swimming in the final heat this evening in 7th place. The time achieved was also an NCAA B qualifying time. As the Vulcans continue to tear up the pool, the coaches remain impressed. The Vulcans look forward to the great opportunities that lie ahead of them tonight. The Vulcans go into tonight in 6th place.
